5 Hole:
The space between a goalies pads

Assist:
Point awarded to a player or players for helping set up a goal; usually the last
two offensive players to handle the puck prior to a goal being scored are
credited for assists.

Back-Checking:
Forwards in the opponents zone
skate back to their own zone to protect their goal and prevent the opponents
from shooting.

 |
Blue Lines:
The pair of lines (blue) that
extend across the width of the rink. They separate the rink into
attacking, neutral and defending zones.

Boards:
The wooden, glass, or plexi-glass walls that surround the rink.
|
 |
Body Check:
Using the hip or shoulder to impede the progress of an opponent who has the
puck.
BODY CHECKS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN OUR LEAGUE AND WILL RESULT IN A
PENALTY.

Breakaway:
A scoring opportunity that
occurs when there are no defending players between the puck carrier and the
opposing goaltender.
|

Butt-Ending:
To hit an opponent using the end
of the stick farthest from the blade.
(This is ILLEGAL)

Changing On The Fly:
Substitution of players without
stoppage of play. This is used in
our Junior division only.
|
 |
Crease:
The box directly in front of the
goaltender. It is 4 feet by 8 feet and marked off with red lines.
Players who do not have the puck may not enter.

Cross-Checking:
Hitting an opponent with both
hands on the stick and no part of the stick on the ice.
(This is ILLEGAL)

Deke:
A quick move intended to fake out
an opponent.
|
 |
Drop Pass:
Puck carrier leaves the puck
behind to be picked up by a trailing teammate.
|
 |
Face-Off:
To initiate play, the puck
is dropped between two opposing players who face each other.
|
 |
Fore-checking:
Pressing the opposition when
they control the puck in the neutral or defensive zone to force a turnover.
|
 |
Freezing the Puck:
Pinning the puck against the
boards.
|
 |
Goal Line:
The red line that runs between the
goal post and extends in both directions to the side boards.
|
 |
Hat Trick:
Three goals scored by one
player in a single game.
|
 |
Head-Manning:
Passing the puck forward to an
attacking teammate.
|
 |
High Stick:
Raising the stick above the
shoulder. If it is used near an opponent, it is a penalty. Goals
scored with a high stick are disallowed.

Interference:
Body contact with an opponent who
does not have the puck and was not the last man to have had the puck.
(This is ILLEGAL)

One-Timer:
Player accepts a pass and attempts
a slap shot in the same motion.
|
 |
Penalty Box:
The area where penalized players
serve their penalty time.
|
 |
Penalty Shot:
One-on-One showdown between
shooter and goaltender. Called when a player on a breakaway is pulled down
from behind. (must meet certain criteria)

Point:
Position just inside the blue line
usually manned by a defenseman when his team is in control in their own
offensive zone.
|
 |
Poke Check:
To dislodge the puck from an
opponent by stabbing the blade of the stick at the puck.
|
 |
Power Play:
When a team has more players
on the ice because of a penalty (or penalties) called against the opposing team.
|
 |
Pull The Goalie:
In an attempt to tie the
score, a team trailing by one or two goals may take its goalie off the rink and
send an extra skater. This usually occurs in the closing minute(s) of a
game.

Red Line:
The (red) line that divides the
rink in half.
|
 |
Save:
An accurate shot blocked by the
goalie.
|
 |
Screen Shot:
A shot the goaltender has
difficulty seeing due to player(s) in front of him.
|
 |
Shorthanded:
When a team is forced to
play with fewer than six players (including the goalie) because one or more have
been sent to the penalty box.

 |
Slap Shot:
A sweeping motion with an
accentuated back swing to shoot the puck (similar to a drive in golf.
|
 |
Slot:
The area directly in front of the
goal crease.
|
 |
Top-Shelf:
Aiming a shot above either
shoulder of a goaltender.
|
 |
Wrist Shot:
The motion of shooting with
the puck directly against the blade of the stick.
